Logs, crash reports and operating figures

Applies to: Windows, macOS, Linux

Stenowise writes a log on your computer. You control crash reports, operating figures and the word count for the rank under Settings › Privacy in the Sent to Stenowise group.

Logs

The log contains counts, timestamps, lengths and settings. It never contains a dictated sentence or a recording. Stenowise keeps at most three files of 5 MB each and overwrites the oldest.

To open the folder, go to Settings › Advanced › Diagnostics and click Open folder in the Logs row. The log goes to Stenowise when you tick “Include the log” while reporting a problem. A crash report contains the end of the log.

Crash reports

Under Crash reports, choose Ask (the default), Send automatically or Never send.

With “Ask”, Stenowise shows the “Unexpected shutdown” window at the next start after a crash. The report contains the version, the operating system, the interface language, the error text and the end of the log. Dictations and recordings are not included. Technical details shows the specifics.

  1. Tick “Send reports automatically from now on” if Stenowise should send future reports without asking.
  2. Click Send report or Do not send.

To send a report, Stenowise needs a sign-in and a connection. If either is missing, the report stays on this device.

Operating figures

Operating figures is off by default. When it is on, Stenowise sends once a day the number of dictations and how many of them were recognised on the device, the number of failures, the speaking time, the version and the operating system. No text, recordings or app names are included.

Count me in the rank

Count me in the rank is on by default. Your word count for the month goes into the rank on Home and Stats. Stenowise uses the word count it already keeps for the weekly limit. If you turn the switch off, your word count no longer counts in the rank of other users.
