Dictate in several languages
Applies to: Windows, macOS, Linux
Stenowise detects the language of your dictation by itself, or it works with a language you set.
Detect automatically
By default, the dictation language is set to “Automatic”. Stenowise then detects which language you speak for each dictation. You can dictate one text in German and the next in English without changing anything.
Choose a fixed language
- Open Settings › Dictation.
- Under Dictation language, click the row. The “Dictation languages” dialog opens.
- Search for the language and select it.
- Click Apply.
If you choose exactly one language, Stenowise recognises speech in that language. If you choose several, Stenowise keeps detecting the language automatically. Detect automatically takes you back to the default.
Switch quickly from the icon
- Click the Stenowise icon in the notification area of the taskbar (Windows), in the menu bar (macOS) or in the notification area (Linux).
- Choose Dictation language, then Automatic, German or English.
If you have set a different language, it also appears in this menu.
The text appears in the wrong language
With “Automatic”, Stenowise can occasionally misjudge the language and, for example, translate your dictation into English. In that case, set the language you dictate in as a fixed language. If you often switch between two languages, change the language from the icon before you dictate.
