HelpDictating

How does Stenowise paste the text?

Applies to: Windows, macOS, Linux

After a dictation, Stenowise puts the text into the field where the cursor is. On Windows and macOS it does this through the clipboard and a paste keystroke. On Linux, Stenowise types the text directly by default.

Paste as

Under Settings › Output › Paste as you choose the keystroke Stenowise pastes with.

SettingEffect
AutomaticDefault. On Windows, Stenowise pastes with Ctrl + V, and with Shift + Insert in remote sessions.
Ctrl + VStenowise always pastes with Ctrl + V.
Shift + InsertStenowise always pastes with Shift + Insert.

Stenowise recognises Remote Desktop, Citrix Workspace, VNC, ConnectWise and VMware Horizon as remote sessions. This detection is only available on Windows.

Clipboard after pasting

Under Settings › Advanced › Clipboard after pasting, the default is “Leave unchanged”. After pasting, Stenowise puts back whatever was on the clipboard before. With “Copy to clipboard”, the dictation stays on the clipboard, and you can paste it again with Ctrl + V.

Enter after dictation

Under Settings › Output, switch on Enter after dictation. If you say “press enter” or “hit enter” at the end of a dictation, Stenowise presses Enter after pasting. In German, “Enter drücken”, “drück Enter” and “drücke Enter” work. The switch is off by default.

macOS

Stenowise pastes with Cmd + V, even when “Ctrl + V” is selected. Pasting into other programs needs Accessibility access. Switch Stenowise on in System Settings under Privacy & Security › Accessibility.

Linux

With “Automatic”, Stenowise types the text directly into the field. One of these tools must be installed:

  • on Wayland: wtype, dotool or ydotool, on KDE kwtype
  • on X11: xdotool or ydotool

On Wayland, Stenowise uses wl-copy for the clipboard. If no suitable tool is available, Stenowise shows “Text could not be pasted”.
