Cancel a dictation or paste it again
Applies to: Windows, macOS, Linux
You can discard a running recording before Stenowise pastes any text. If a dictation landed in the wrong field, you can paste it again in the right place.
| Function | Windows | macOS | Linux |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel | Esc | Esc | from the icon in the notification area |
| Paste last dictation again | Alt + Shift + V | Option + Shift + V | Alt + Shift + V |
Cancel a recording
- Press Esc while recording.
Stenowise stops the recording and pastes nothing. Esc only works while a recording is running, and you cannot assign it to a different key.
You can also click Cancel in the on-screen indicator, or choose Cancel from the icon menu. The menu only shows this item during a recording.
Paste the last dictation again
- Click into the field where the text belongs.
- Press Alt + Shift + V, or Option + Shift + V on macOS.
Stenowise pastes the edited version of the last dictation from the history once more. If there is none, it pastes the raw version.
This needs the history. If Keep a history is switched off under Settings › Privacy, or the history is empty, nothing happens. The history is switched on by default.
As an alternative, choose Copy last dictation from the icon menu and paste the text with Ctrl + V, or Cmd + V on macOS.
Linux
On Linux, the “Cancel” row is missing from the settings, and Esc does not cancel a recording.
- While recording, click the Stenowise icon in the notification area.
- Choose Cancel.
On Linux, Stenowise shows no on-screen indicator by default, so the icon is the only way to cancel.
