HelpText cleanup and Voice Styles
Set Voice Styles per app
Applies to: Windows, macOS, Linux
With Voice Styles, Stenowise matches the tone of your dictation to the app you dictate into. An email can then sound more formal than a chat message.
Choose a style
- In the sidebar, open Voice Styles.
- Under Per app, choose the Mail, Chat, Editor or Other tab.
- For Mail or Chat, click the version that should apply.
| Tab | Apps | Versions |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook, Thunderbird, Mail | Formal, Matter-of-fact (default), Relaxed | |
| Chat | Slack, Teams, Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal | Matter-of-fact, Relaxed (default), Very relaxed |
| Editor | Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, IntelliJ, Cursor | no choice |
| Other | all other apps | baseline |
The versions do the following:
- Formal: Formal tone, no contractions, no exclamation marks
- Matter-of-fact (Mail): Full sentences, clear paragraphs
- Relaxed (Mail): Short sentences, direct tone
- Matter-of-fact (Chat): Full sentences, matter-of-fact tone
- Relaxed (Chat): Short sentences, casual tone
- Very relaxed: lowercase, minimal punctuation
In the editor: “Technical terms, file names and code stay unchanged. Otherwise the baseline applies.” Under Other, the baseline applies without further adjustment. Which apps belong to a group is fixed.
Switch off a style
Every tab except Other has an Own style for … switch, for example “Own style for Mail”. It is on by default. If you switch it off, the baseline applies in these apps.
Use the app context
For Stenowise to know which app you dictate into, Use the app context must be switched on under Settings › Privacy. It is on by default and only appears while text cleanup is switched on.
Only the app name is captured. It goes to the Stenowise server in the EU with the dictation only when a Voice Style applies to that app. Stenowise never reads the window title.
If you switch off Use the app context, no Voice Style applies and the baseline applies in every app. Voice Styles only work while text cleanup is switched on.
