The text is not pasted
Applies to: Windows, macOS, Linux
Stenowise recognised you, but the text is not in the field or it went to another window. Get the text back first, then check the field and the paste method.
“Text could not be pasted”
The full message reads: “The app did not accept the text. Click into the field you want to write in and dictate again.” It appears, for example, when a program refuses the input or when no typing tool is installed on Linux.
Get the text back
Stenowise saves the dictation in the history before it pastes the text. For this, Settings › Privacy › Keep a history must be on, which it is by default. Three ways bring the text back:
- Paste last dictation again: Put the cursor in the right field and press the shortcut from the table. Stenowise pastes the edited version, or the raw version for a dictation without text cleanup.
- Copy last dictation: Click the Stenowise icon and choose “Copy last dictation”. Then paste the text with Ctrl + V, or with Cmd + V on macOS.
- History: Open the History page in Stenowise, move the mouse over the entry and click “Copy”. Older dictations are there too.
| Windows | macOS | Linux | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paste last dictation again | Alt + Shift + V | Option + Shift + V | Alt + Shift + V |
With the history off, Stenowise keeps neither the text nor the recording. These ways are then not available.
Check the field
Stenowise pastes where the cursor is at the moment of pasting. Click into the field before you dictate and keep the window in front until the text appears. If you switch to another window during the recording, the text lands there.
Check the paste method
Under Settings › Output › Paste as, “Automatic” is set by default. With it, Stenowise pastes with Ctrl + V on Windows and with Cmd + V on macOS.
Terminals and remote access
On Windows, Stenowise recognises Remote Desktop, Citrix Workspace, VNC, ConnectWise and VMware Horizon. With “Automatic”, it pastes there with Shift + Insert. On macOS and Linux, Stenowise does not recognise remote sessions. If the text does not arrive in a terminal or another remote access tool, set the method by hand:
- Open Settings › Output.
- Under “Paste as”, choose “Shift + Insert”.
- Dictate again. If the text still does not arrive, try “Ctrl + V”.
Linux
On Linux, Stenowise types the text directly into the field. One of these tools must be installed:
| Session | Tools |
|---|---|
| Wayland | wtype, dotool or ydotool, on KDE kwtype |
| X11 | xdotool or ydotool |
Install the right tool through the package manager of your distribution. For the clipboard on Wayland, Stenowise uses wl-copy.
macOS
On macOS, Stenowise needs Accessibility access to put text into other programs.
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility.
- Switch on Stenowise.
If the problem persists, report it under Support › Report a problem and tick “Include the log”.
