Create and insert snippets

Applies to: Windows, macOS, Linux

A snippet inserts a fixed text such as a sign-off or an address word for word when you say its trigger phrase.

Create a snippet

  1. Open Snippets in the sidebar.
  2. In the “Trigger phrase” field, enter the words that call up the snippet, for example “my signature”.
  3. In the “Text, line breaks are kept” field, enter the text that Stenowise inserts.
  4. Click Add.

To edit or delete a snippet, move the pointer over it and choose Edit or Delete.

When a snippet takes effect

Stenowise inserts the snippet when the whole dictation consists of the trigger phrase. It also takes effect when the phrase is at the start or the end of a dictation and a pause separates it from the rest, which shows as a punctuation mark in the text. In the middle of a sentence, it does not take effect. Upper and lower case and punctuation around the phrase make no difference.

Stenowise inserts the snippet text exactly as you created it. The text never goes through text cleanup. Snippets also work without a connection.

Limits

  • The trigger phrase can be up to 80 characters long, the text up to 4,000 characters.
  • Each phrase can exist only once. For a duplicate, you see a message such as ““my signature” already has a snippet.”

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the phrase is also a replacement in the dictionary?

The snippet takes effect when you say nothing but this phrase, the replacement in the middle of a sentence. Stenowise shows a notice about this.

Are snippets available on other devices?

Yes, if you turn on sync on every device. Stenowise then syncs your snippets together with the dictionary.
